Chapter Fourteen

Edith was up early the next morning gathering the things she needed for “Operation Home Cooking.” She and Clara decided to fry the catfish and hushpuppies on her canning porch so it didn’t stink up their houses, but there was still slaw and potato salad to be made. Edith started peeling potatoes and only stopped when she felt like her hands were turning into misshapen claws. Surely, she thought, fifteen pounds of potatoes would be enough. She started them boiling in a large stock pot and got started shredding batches of cabbage and carrots for coleslaw.

By the time she had both of them finished, it was time to head over to Clara’s house, but not before she grabbed a few baskets from her spare room. If they were going to offer a picnic lunch, they couldn’t show up without baskets. She loaded everything into her car and headed off down the road. She made sure to drive carefully so she didn’t spill any of the precious cargo.

“Is there room in the fridge for these bowls?” Edith shouted through the house.

“Yes, I just cleaned it out this morning to make sure,” Clara replied.

“Thank you, and I’m sure it needed to be.”

“Aren’t you just a standup comedian this afternoon.”

“Just stating the facts.”

“Or your version.”

“What are we eating for lunch?”

“We have all this food; what do you think we’re eating?”

“I’m not really in the mood for catfish.”

“Oh my gosh, what would her highness prefer then?” Clara teased.

“I could really go for a fried bologna sandwich, and I know you have some because I just saw it in the fridge.”

“You would seriously prefer fried bologna over catfish?”

“I sure would.”

“We really need to get your head examined.”

“Maybe they’ll offer us a two for one deal?”

The ladies ate a quick bite of lunch before they got started on frying the catfish. The key to crispy filets was not overcrowding the pot. They set up a series of shallow pans to hold the breading ingredients and got started. Once the fish was done, Clara moved on to the hushpuppies while Edith wrapped the still hot filets in foil to keep them warm. She started loading the baskets and as soon as the hush puppies were done, they covered the hot food with kitchen towels and were ready to go. They loaded Clara’s car and headed off to the police station. Edith said a silent prayer that this would work; if not, she feared an innocent man might go down for murder.

Clara wheeled the car into the parking lot at the station, and the ladies hopped out to retrieve their goods. Thankfully Edith had remembered to grab some paper plates and plastic forks on the way out. There was no way they would let her anywhere near a prisoner with a metal fork or knife. They carried the heavy baskets into the station and rested them on the front desk. Ida gave them a knowing nod and that was their signal to start the show.

“Oh goodness ladies, what do we have here?” Ida said loudly.
